Pro:

  • note ( meetings & progetti),
  • indirizzi,
  • informazioni personali,
  • liste ( azioni, libri da leggere, musica da ascoltare, cose da cercare),
  • Ordini online (ebbene si .. anche mylasteureka pecca)
  • Budget.

5 reason for use fountain pens on daily basis

Fountain pens are beautiful writing instrument, but this is not the only reason for start using them on daily basis. I am a pens collector since the 1986, but I was more focus on ball point pens. At the Elementary school I had a Pelican fountain pen in orange but I never use it since my teachers prefer to introduce BIC ball pen instead. That was a huge mistake. If you are a pen and paper user, and/or a planner addict, here there are five reason for consider to use a fountain pen on your everyday writing.

  1. Use fountain pens increases coordination eyes-hand as well as handwriting in general;
  2. The position and the morphology of the nib effects severely on the writing posture correcting “your way” to hold a pen. How? It is pretty simple. If you hold your pen in the “wrong way” the ink do not flow from the nib and the pen do not write. Gradually your brain will  teach your hand until you will arrive to hold your pen in the right way without think about. You will also improve the posture of neck and back;
  3. The writing experience is less energy taking since the ink flow from the nib and do not require any pressure on the paper;
  4. Writing with a fountain pen is cheaper. Yep 🙂 If you are a student you should really consider to purchase a fountain pen since with one bottle of ink you can refill over and over your pen saving a huge amount of money.
  5. Use fountain pen is environmental friendly. For the same reason of the point n.4. you could reduce the amount of garbage that you produce. One pen with one bootle of ink and you are ready to go. The only think that will going to be trash is the bottle of ink when you will purchase a new one and the nib (just in case you want to change nib size or the nib broke)

This is why in the last 3 month I use only fountain pen. I have a LAMY and a Kaweco pen. One have an italic nib and the other have a fine nib. I use this set up since I love lettering and having two kind of nib with the same ink make me happy when I try different writing styles on my Journal, but when I am in University I usually take with me only the Kaweco with fine nib for taking notes.

I hope that this post answer some of the questions that I received about the pens that I currently use and why I use them. I would like to encourage you to share your experience with pen and fountain pen leaving a comment down below. Do you use fountain pen? What is your favorite pen? Were did you usually purchase ink and supply?

Have a nice week end

Back to basis : Gething Things Done™ by David Allen & my soft skills.

“No software, seminar, cool personal planner, or personal mission statement will simplify your workday or make your choices for you as you move through your day, week, and life.”

Wednesday at work I had a big important meeting with the super boss of everything. During the meeting come up some goal to achieve and I feel the exigence to review my planning system in order to get (finally) my PhD title.

Work Shop offer by the University of Münster

At home I take out from the bookshelf the material that Dr. Eva Reichmann give us, more that one year ago, during the work shop “Coming in term with your doctorate” offer by the University of Münster. I really enjoy go back to this compact small collection of tricks and tips for time menagment in according with the personality that characterize every of us. According with my personality (NTPE) my big problem is how to deal with tasks that derive from ideas that pop up in my mind like a tornado every second.

Be scientists mean to me swimming  in a infinite ocean of possibilities. Every item that I find is for “the eyes of my mind” incredible attractive. I don’t find peace until I don’t end to dissect every single component of every single “Stuff” that come to me. So come up two main problem that I have to deal with every day of my life:

  • Problem #1: time is limited.
  • Problem #2: not everything it is urgent(U) and important (I).

Summary: I have a lot of “stuff” that have to be organized in a Time Frame

That seems to be easier, but for ENTP personality it is not. Control thoughts takes an huge amount of energy for me. It is like a continue battle to take my mind back to the current moment and do what I should do, and not what my mind find attractive.

Here GTD© by David Allen, offer a god method for dealing with the amount of stuff and organize them effectively, without loosing ideas.

The first action when you start implementing the method it is the most difficult step for a stationary addicted: you have to decide the physical instruments to use for collecting stuff.

For collecting objects I decide to use a Plastic square box. For collecting idea the decision process is a more difficult matter.

This is what I have at home:

  • Ring binder : Filofax Domino (A5), Filofax  Calipso (Personal Compact), Cartesio InTempo (Personal), Filofax Finsbury (Personal), Kaufpark binder (Pocket)
  • Notebook: Midori™ Traveler’s Notebook in Regular  & Passport size.
  • Hobonichi techo (A6)
  • iPad mini & iPad 4

I start the decisional process saying that Hobonichi is the first thing that I do not consider as appropriate for GTD, it is a good Agenda, but the diary it is not the only a component of GTD©. Daily to do lists, in opinion of Allen, increase frustration and them should be replace for context organized Action Lists.

Calendar should contain only Action Time Sensitive (ATS) like : Appointments, Events and Due Date.

Organizer or digital devices seams to be more indicated. Here the war between the nerd bioinformatic scientist and the old school stationary supply lover take place. In this war “paper and pen” win slightly, because I simply find easier trust the “concrete” paper respect to the cyber space. It is really a personal issue. We could spend years discussing what is better but, at the end,  you should listen your heart and go for it.

Traveler notebook vs Filofax/InTempo : ring vs elastic. The contest that devide the planner community in the current days, after that the made in Thailand notebook system arrived in Europe and U.S. Here rings win in a GTD based system since it is easier to have illlimitaded possibility in therm of number of pages, organized in sections, respect limited number of notebook with limited number of pages. Moreover, organizer content can easily change on the go and be archive and properly organized for future reference. MTN could work only if you have a notebook for each project plus a calendar. If you have a huge collection of cover you can go for it, maybe trying to split the notebooks according by contexts.

Now, decided that Organizers are the most easy way to implement GTD© in my life I should pick one from my bookshelf and setup it for the current week. For doing that, I open my binder one at the time, analysing the feelings that each of them are giving to me. Feeling, yep. Each of my binder have a story. For example, a series of coincidence make me the new owner of a fabulous Van dear Spek that will be at home soon. Another one. I purchase my InTempo during a conference were I did a god talk.

So … The winner is the “InTempo” because feeling a god scientists in this particular moment of mylife it is what I need to coming in term with my PhD.

Curious about the Diary insert that I decide to use? Follow me and read the next post.

How to plan your month efficiently with the backward planning.

In your monthly view write:

  1. Important appointments to remember (Dr., bills, …)
  2. Birthdays;
  3. trips

NOTE : Remember to mark deadline!

Do not lose time writing specifics things for the event. Your monthly view it’s only for have in front of your eyes the big picture in order to understand what could be done in the month on the basis of the time that you already have.

For example, if you have a three-days trip in one week and an important dead line in the week after, probably it is a god idea plan some time for the project in the week before the trip, in order to have enough time and energy for complete the work in time. This planning techniques is named backward planning and it is particularly useful if you are a student.

The idea is spit big tasks (or goals) in smaller things that has to be done weekly (or daily) and assign to them to a specific time frame.

Perhaps, if you have nobody following you or your work, will be important that you establish some milestone for yourself. In that way will be easy to keep going small or big projects without jump in the procrastination hell. In fact, we usually have less problem in the “doing process” if somebody tell us “You have to do this until that day” since our mind understand “I have to do x for person y until the day z” but, if there is nobody telling us she will understand “I have to do x” and she will not give priority at the task itself at all.

Yes, I know. Psychology sometime sucks. Moreover if you have disturb like ADHD, your mind will be some like “I have to do x” and after 5 min “Oh, no, I should do y”. But this is another story …

In conclusion, keep your monthly spread more clean that you can!  Write only what it is important for your backward planning and try to enjoy the process. Go back at your monthly spread unless 2 times per week and keep it update.

And you? Are you currently using a monthly spread in your organiser? And how are you using it?

Let me know in a comment below!

Happy planning!
